The landing beaches of 6 june 1944 are, of course, the attraction of the whole region. Americans have managed a very special commemoration of their heroic troops by erecting a memorial and well documented museum next to the Colleville-sur-Mer cemetery. Take your time if you plan visiting the memorial. A few kilometers from there, the Pointe du Hoc also represents a strategic and historic place. More direct and faster roads bring us to the mont Saint-Michel. No more need to present it. It remains however impressive by its dimension and the climbing is recommended outside of the touristic peak periods. Early in the morning to visit the cathedral, and later in the evening for a nicer light. The up tide to be seen from the walls,… rather fast. Of course, many lodging possiblities, here and in the neighbourhood, yet it is still possible to extend the stage further to Saint-Malo, while passing by Cancale and its seafood fishermen harbour. The end of this stage depends on the Weymouth bound ferry departure time towards England. That is where begins the second part of this journey, including Devon Cornwall, another extreme point of the country with different landscapes.
